The history of Conté à Paris products cannot be separated from the personality of the company founder, Nicolas Jacques Conté. Born in 1755, he won the title of a painter, chemist, physicist, hot air balloon driver and inventor during his 50 years. The historical achievement of Nicolas Jacques Conté’s is undeniable. In 1794 he developed the modern graphite lead from a mixture of clay and graphite, making it possible to create different degrees of hardness for pencils. The pencil factory he built in 1795 enabled France to produce its own calligraphy and drawing materials. A few years later, he developed “pencils without sheathing” (lead leads) that replaced those from “Italian stone”. He worked to make the paints “firm and unchangeable” to meet the demands of painters. This was the birth of artist pencils and pastels. Over the decades, the quality of its products and the expansion of the Conté à Paris range have enabled it to be established as a real reference for artists worldwide.
